Today, I explained our custom of O-Bon (one of Japanese custom for worship the spirits of ancestors). She talked her similar custom like a O-bon. To my surprise, there is quite similar custom. During Halloween season, she usually put the cushion for her ancestors under the candle lantern. It is all the same our O-bon custom for prepare the zabuton (Japanese cushion) under the paper lantern. This custom is based on animism, folk faith of ancient Japan. I don’t know why such old custom is quite similar to Philippine custom which being continued today.
She added another Halloween season custom. On that season, they usually picnic to their cemetery. In Japan, only Okinawa area (southeast end of Japan) have the custom similar to that. There are over 1000km distance from Philippine to Okinawa, over 1500km to Tokyo. I think our ancestors were traveled far away than we thought.
