We mainly talked about a pregnant woman who lost her baby since she had Covid-19 positive and there were no hospitals to admit her. There are many cases where people cannot find hospitals to admit them. Most Japanese hospitals are under strain due to an explosive spread of coronavirus. Also we talked about that Covid-19 tests get boost amid battle against delta. Places for PCR test and daily covid-19 tests will dramatically ramp up. If individuals can get more PCR testing, it may be helpful to find out their condition and isolate themselves and then prevent them going about. The government wants to use the full capacity of public and private testing as much as possible.

解体新書に続き江戸時代の日本の医療についてお話しました。それまでの伝統的な中国医療に頼っていたところに
新しい西洋医学が紹介され当時の先駆者は大変ご苦労されたと思います。勉強になります。

このクラスでは「解体新書」についてお話しました。杉田玄白と前野良沢が翻訳を始めたとき､彼らはほとんど原書を
理解出来なかったそうです。頭蓋骨（skull)や軟骨(cartilage)という用語は当時の医学の概念になかったため､苦労して
創作したそうです。

Double lesson

We went over my website. We mainly discussed about a movement of Taliban. Both the Taliban and al-Qaeda started to control the area of Afghanistan including Kandahar and many people are in danger and need to evacuate. After US military forces withdraw, Afghanistan can become a hotbed of terrorism. A Japanese famous doctor, Nakamura went to Afghanistan and contributed a lot to improve infrastructure.

19世紀の異国船の到来のうち、フェートン号事件とモリソン号事件についてお話しました。「異国船打払令」が1825年に出され長英らが政府の対外政策を批判したことが蘭学者の弾圧につながりました。この時代の出来事を見ても学ぶべきことは多いと思います。

このクラスでは、江戸時代の蘭学者高野長英についてお話しました。逃亡中に西洋の兵学論を翻訳しました。
その本が｢三兵答古知幾」で、興味深いのは「Tactics」(戦略）を「とうこちいき」と音訳したことです。さらに興味深いのは原作者の
Heinrich von Brandt という人がナポレオン戦争に参加していたことです。長英先生のご努力に報いるためにもしっかり勉強したいと思います。

We went over my website, talked about Sri Lankan woman who was detained at a Japanese immigration center. She was a victim of domestic violence by her live-in partner and was detained at the Japanese immigration center. She applied for provisional release for hospital treatment, but the Japanese immigration center didn't accept her request because a lot of immigrants tend to request for health treatment to to be away from the immigration center and she died at the Japanese immigration center. Nobody recognized her health condition. Her supporters alleged the tragedy was caused by insufficient medical treatment provided by the immigration facility.

Double lesson

Both my husband and I got the second shot of coronavirus. On the next day, I got a little fever, felt listless and suffered from the side effect of coronavirus vaccination. At my area, the situation of medical care facilities is quite bad. Even I call an ambulance, I have to wait for a while. We are in short of hospitals who accept emergency patients. Some people who got coronavirus infection need to die at home before getting a treatment. I think we should shift our policy to put young people at the heart of development, but no governors can do that because they try to curry popularity.

伊能忠敬に続き、彼の師である高橋至時と高橋景保についてお話しました。江戸時代の天文方はかなり優秀で、江戸には
天文台があったそうで、それが北斎の浮世絵になっています。景保は優秀な人で洋書の翻訳などもしていたのに悲惨な最期を遂げたことが気の毒でなりません。

このクラスでは伊能忠敬の地図作成についてお話しました。quadrant （傾斜を測定する道具）やpelorus（方位磁石）などの
普段あまり使わない用語が出てきたので勉強になりました。50歳を過ぎてから仕事を引退し、日本全国を歩いて地図の
作成に半生を費やした伊能氏に敬意を払いたいと思います。

Double lesson

We mainly talked about the Tokyo Olympics. Some are dissatisfied with its opening ceremony, but I feel Japan did its best to prepare for the ceremony during such a coronavirus pandemic. With all the impact from Tokyo Olympics and Covid-19, Japanese government is hemorrhaging and Tokyo has not given economic support to restaurants. Because of that, some restaurants don't restrict their business hours. The number of cases in Tokyo is greatly increasing and reached over 3000 due to Delta variant. A foot traffic should be restricted to reduce a number of cases. Europe had not experience these heavy rains flooding before. Only 50 percent of the population say they are ready for a climate change. In China, there was a flooding at a subway station and China also needs to concern about a climate change, but it's costly to make changes to a railway system to adjust to a climate change.

間宮林蔵が樺太探検をしていた頃の、ロシア船の来港についてお話ししました。レザノフは1804年に長崎に来港し、幕府の
対応がひどかったので腹を立て、部下に樺太とサハリンの襲撃を命令しました。レザノフはその後、アメリカに進出した時、スペイン系の少女と恋に落ち、婚約までしましたが、この恋は実らず、極寒の地で人生を終えました。二人のロマンスはアメリカでミュージカルにまでなりました。このエピソードを先生はたいそう気に入って下さいました。

江戸時代の探検家、間宮林蔵についてお話ししました。これに先立ち、吉村昭氏の小説、「間宮林蔵」を読みました。
極寒の中、徒歩で樺太の探索を成し遂げたのは立派だと思います。樺太が英語ではSahkalinになるのに、択捉はEtorofu
のままです。英語で地名を説明するときひとつづつ確認が必要だと痛感しました。

Double lesson

We went over my websites, talked about Toyota which decided not to advertise Tokyo Olympics since a lot of people do not have good view of the Olympics. Not only Toyota, but other sponsors may follow Toyota. We also talked about a missing Ugandan athlete. Japan will deport him once it finds him.

シーボルトに続き、娘さんの楠本イネさんの紹介をしました。様々な困難にもめげず医学を学び、日本で最初の女医として
活躍されました。想像を絶する困難の中、ひたすら努力を重ねられた姿に畏敬の念を覚えます。
