Nice talking to you, Sienna! Today's topic was Biden's Southeast Asian policy. For instance, the White House announced that Vice President Harris would visit Singapore and Vietnam. Then we also talked about drug eradication and the coming presidential election in the Philippines. |

We read an article on Taiwanese international relations; a nonpartisan group of Japanese lawmakers held online talks with U.S. and Taiwanese lawmakers. We also talked about the Tokyo Olympic Games. Thank you so much! |

Many thanks for your enjoyable conversation, Sienna! We read an article on South Asian international relations. Traditionally, the South Asian region countries have strong ties with India, both politically and economically. Therefore, building a relationship with China, which is expanding its influence in the region, will allow these states to strike a balance with India that is tilting toward the U.S. and the Quad. |

Thank you indeed! The article we read today was about China’s new ambassador to the U.S., who has little U.S. experience, unlike his predecessors. But, according to the author, he might be even more valuable because of his direct access to the Chinese president. |

Our topic was U.S. democracy or the “Freedom Agenda” in the context of international and domestic politics. The article examines the difference between the George W. Bush and Joe Biden administrations. Then we talked about political regimes in Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe. I appreciate your thoughtful lesson! |

Thank you so much, Sienna! Our topic was the "Indo-Pacific"—the article we read argued that after the Trump administration's inauguration in 2017, the U.S. expressed interest in Japan's FOIP during policy discussions, creating an environment for the U.S. and Japan to come together to promote FOIP. Then we talked about how the Biden administration differs from the Trump administration's policy toward Indo-Pacific. |

We read an article that depicts a long roadmap to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and normalize the U.S.-North Korea relations, which would take at least decades. I bet the authors' road map would be desirable if realized, but it seems too far removed from reality. Nice talking to you! |

Thanks a lot, Sienna! We read an article on "silos" in China, newly discovered by U.S. nuclear experts through commercial satellite photos. Then we talked about nuclear weapons in the world, 90% of which are held by the U.S. and Russia. In the current situation of nuclear proliferation, the framework of the U.S. and Russia, symbolized by the New START, is not enough. |

Glad to see you again! We read an article on the recent U.S.-South Korea relations; for instance, U.S. President Joe Biden and South Korean President Moon Jae-in had agreed to strengthen cooperation at their summit meeting in May. Then we also talked about a research report released by the IISS, a leading British think tank—the report ranked 15 countries into three tiers in order of their capability. |

I appreciate your enjoyable lesson, Sienna! Today's topic was U.S. Secretary of Defense Austin's visit to Southeast Asia, originally scheduled for June. The major difference between Austin's speech and that of the previous administration was that he repeatedly stressed his emphasis on allies and regional partners to build a strong international order. We also talked about the concept of "integrated deterrence," a keyword to examine the position of the DOD, which reminded me of "smart power" that Secretary of State Hilary Clinton had stated. |

Many thanks to you, Sienna! We read a newspaper article on recent Sino-U.S. talks. As expected, the meetings ended with both sides arguing about their principles. |

I'm glad to see you again! The article we read today was on the Biden doctrine, which might backfire because many countries, especially ASEAN nations, are hesitant to choose between the U.S. and China. In the first place, these countries are often authoritarian. But, on the other hand, when it comes to Japan, the situation is not always the same as, for example, Germany's. |

We read a newspaper article on Sino-American relations―deputy secretary of state is now visiting China. Then we discussed two leaders’ online talks, “vaccine diplomacy,” and Japan's role hopefully, but not probably, to build a bridge between the superpowers and resolve their tension. So I really appreciate your insightful lesson. |

Thank you always, Sienna! We read an article on the history and future of Chinese politics. According to the two authors, there are some scenarios on the Chinese presidency, which is still unpredictable, depending on several domestic conditions. |

I'm delighted to talk to you, Sienna! Today's topic was cyberattacks; the U.S. and its allies—Japan, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand, as well as NATO and the EU—coordinated to issue a statement. Japan has been pointed out as lagging in the development of cyber defense, which is why I'd like to see a comprehensive review of the technologies and legal systems that support the cyber defense. |

Good to see you again, Sienna! Today's topic was U.S.-China "neo-engagement" that points out deep ties and interdependence in trade, international students, and climate change—the theory is close to that of neo-liberalism. However, "neo-engagement" seems to be protean and phantasmagoric as the authors cite Blinken's statement at the end of this article. |

The article we picked up was on whether the U.S. could lead the world; the author concludes that Americans must fix what has gone wrong and rethink how they deal with the rest of the world. Specifically, we referred to the Supreme Court, which ruled that Arizona's state law to tighten voting rules did not violate the Voting Rights Act. I hope today's topic did not bore you. |

Nice talking to you, Sienna! We read an article on economic security and Japan's role—economic security has become an important issue in the increasingly fierce confrontation between the U.S. and China. Then we discussed what kind of economic security strategy Japan should adopt in the midst of the U.S.-China confrontation. |

We read an article commemorating the 50th anniversary of Kissinger's secret visit to China. We also talked about environment and trade issues in U.S.-East Asian relations as well. I'm delighted to talk to you again! |

I am grateful for your lesson, Sienna! We chose an article on Singapore's foreign policy; the author argues that the Sino-U.S. split forces Singapore to choose sides. While U.S. President Joe Biden has been advocating a so-called "partnership of democracies," Singapore has rejected the idea, calling it "Cold-War-style." |
