Many thanks for your selecting and teaching an intriguing article on Indonesia that focuses on Suharto! I could broadly review the modern political history of Indonesia. |

Thank you for introducing an informative webpage, Sienna! We read an article on the U.S. nomination of Rahm Emanuel as ambassador to Japan. It's puzzling why it took so long for Biden to nominate him because the former mayor of Chicago's name has been mentioned for several months. Then we also talked about the U.S. nomination of Nicholas Burns as ambassador to China; he is a foreign policy veteran who has served both Democratic and Republican presidents. |

Good talking to you, Sienna! We picked up an article on the U.S. pivot to the Indo-Pacific and Asian reactions. Then we also shed light on Biden's trade policy, which is, not joining the CPTPP, protectionism that takes care of the middle class in the U.S. and is inherited from Trump. It is not convincing to ask allies and like-minded countries to side with the U.S. in the U.S.-China confrontation while implementing protectionism on trade. |

I appreciate your lesson, as always! We read a relatively long article on international relations in the South China Sea. I believe that the U.S. pivot to Asia means deterring Chana and emphasizing its allies, not necessarily Southeast Asia as a whole—the Biden administration has bypassed Indonesia and Thailand, which would have been priorities for successive administrations up to Obama. Most likely, the partners with whom Biden wants to establish a strategic relationship in the region are, at least potentially, pro-U.S.Southeast Asian countries, rather than ASEAN itself. |

I appreciate your insightful lesson! First, we read a brief article on the impact and implications of Afghanistan's fall on Taiwan. Then, we compared Afghanistan and Taiwan; Tsai Ing-wen, unlike Ghani, would not flee Taiwan. In the first place, there is no Taliban-like anti-government military organization in Taiwan. The KMT criticizes the Tsai administration, though. |

I appreciate your kindness in conducting an enjoyable lesson at a distance. Today, we picked up an article that discusses how the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan influences Southeast Asia. The withdrawal has caused some Southeast Asian countries to express concern about the impact on Islamic extremists in their countries. Then we also talked about U.S. Vice President Harris's visit to Singapore and Vietnam, where she will deliver a speech on the Biden administration's Southeast Asia policy, which will have great significance for her career as a potential candidate to succeed Biden in the 2024 presidential election. |

Thank you for taking time while you are enjoying your vacation, Sienna! We chose an article on Southeast Asia, focusing on Cambodia—according to the author, China is repeating U.S. mistakes there. The article also emphasized the difference between the Hun Sen administration and the Cambodian people. Lastly, we talked about the BRI and the situation in Afghanistan; it is only a matter of time before the Taliban government is formed. |

I really appreciate your informative lesson, Sienna! First, we read an interview on Japan's role in the Indo-Pacific. Also, we talked about the relations between the MOD and the MIC. Furthermore, we discussed the CPTPP—as the chair of the CPTPP this year, Japan will strive to promote free and fair trade. Japan wants to see the U.S. return to the CPTPP, but I understand that there will be difficulties in doing so. |

Thank you for taking time while you are on a trip! We picked up an article on the U.S. counterterrorism approach, which the authors call "a medium-footprint strategy." Thereafter, we talked about the current Afghanistan situation—the Taliban is stepping up its offensive to take advantage of the U.S. policy to hasten the end of the 20-year war in Afghanistan. |

We read an article on cyber-attacks—recently, the cyber-attacks appear to have intensified. There has been an increase in attacks on infrastructures essential to citizens' lives, such as food, energy, and healthcare. Hope to see you soon! |

Thank you indeed for your helpful lesson, Sienna! Today's article was long. The topic was the rebalance or pivot that the successive U.S. administrations—Obama, Trump, and Biden—attempted to accomplish but still in the process. We also focused on the Global Posture Review, which DOD is compiling and will accelerate the trend of shifting U.S. forces from around the Middle East to the Asia-Pacific region. |

Nice to talk to you, Sienna! We picked up an article on Middle Eastern international affairs that focuses on its relations with China and the U.S. Then we talked about the proximity of China to the UAE, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, which has raised concerns among the U.S. officials—there is uncertainty about the U.S.'s plans to sell weapons to the UAE. |

Thank you always! We read an interview of a South Korean professor, a specialist of security in the Korean Peninsula. He emphasizes the role of diplomacy, based on the assumption that North Korea will not collapse due to sanctions and pressure from other countries. Then we discussed the Biden administration's potential working-level talks with North Korea; Biden is seeking to shift from the policy of the previous Trump administration, which utilized military pressure to bring about the talks, to a dialogue with a focus on diplomacy at the working-level, such as Deputy Secretary Wendy Sherman and Sung Kim, special envoy for North Korea. |

I really appreciate your enjoyable lesson! We chose an article on the "New Cold War," where ideological conflicts have finally come to the fore, as Biden calls it democracy vs. autocracy. Before the coronavirus, there was room for a deal between the U.S. and China on trade friction. However, the deterioration of the bilateral relations might be approaching a turning point. |

Many thanks to you, Sienna! We read an article on German foreign policy; Germany dispatched its first frigate to the Indo-Pacific region in nearly 20 years, adding tension to the delicate relationship between Germany and China. Then we discussed the German general election and the post-Merkel government—Germany's engagement in Asia is in an adjustment phase in cooperation with liberal countries and dependence on the Chinese economy. |
