Mark, sorry, I should have started our first lesson in 2018, with a lighter topic! I hope my Taiwan photos are enough cheerful to compensate the dark mood in the beginning. I am going to plan my next trip, perhaps to Nordic Europe, in a couple of month - and definitely include a visit to Oslo you recommended. I also need to save money to go there without worries of going broke. Wish me luck. |

Today, I chose the article "Women and economics", that is difficult for me to read. Although economists like logical thinking, in their field, the number of female economists is very few without proper evaluation. In some fields, more and more women are becoming active, on the other hand, in others, the number of women experts is still small. That might be loss of talents. The rest of the article would be talked at next lesson. Thank you very much, Mark for helping me understand the contents by easy explanation and good examples. Looking forward to seeing you at next lesson. |

Today, I read the article about China's completely banning ivory trade, which would contribute to protecting the world elephant population. I asked the unfamiliar words and phrases and Mark explained them with easily understandable words. The Chinese government's drastical countermeasures for illegal trade of ivory would work well even though there is still a long way to go. This article is good for reading training because there are some difficult expressions for me. For example, "As the world commends China's leadership in a region rife with illegal worldlife trade, I can't help but be remained of enormity of the task that lies ahead,,. Mark helped me understand the meaning with his explanation. Thank you very much for giving me helpful and relevant articles and explanations as always. See you next time. |

We talked about sleeping of mordern people and the influence caused by time of sleeping. Compared to the old days, we have work pressure more and more, which shorten our sleeping time and deteriorates the quality. Today, I read an interesting article about workplace conflicts that Mark chose. He explained about some words and phrases I'm not familiar. "on board""less on board" meaning agreeing some opinions or not. "tricks of the trade"=professional knowledge or expertise, "like chalk and cheese"=being definitely different from each other, "feather one's nest","identify""scheme",,,etc. His instructions and explanations are kindly understandable and easy to memorize. Thank you very much for your enthusiastic lesson as always. See you next lesson! |
