Today's theme was Taiwan's ADIZ—the PLA has been crossing the median line. We also discussed the future of Taiwan and the role of the U.S. and Japan. Have a nice weekend! |

Thanks for your meaningful class. We learned a book review on Chinese identity politics, which rather seemed to be the author's own historical essay. My impression was that when China takes up history, it means not only to reclaim lost territories such as Taiwan but also to apply the tribute system with China at the top to contemporary international relations. |

Thanks a lot for your obliging tutoring. We shared an article on the Taiwan Strait—the author believes that Taiwan and Japan's security are indivisible. Then we chatted about the 1958 documents recently revealed by the New York Times; the U.S. military's operational headquarters recommended that the White House prepare a plan to use nuclear weapons against mainland China. In the end, President Eisenhower discouraged the use of nuclear weapons and allowed the U.S. Military to use only conventional weapons, though. |

I appreciate your riveting lesson. We read a paper on the speech of Cambell, known as the "Asian Tsar"—his pet theory of a pivot or rebalance is coming to fruition. Then we also discussed the future of TPP and Quad, which the U.K. has expressed interest in joining. |

We picked up an article on the Biden administration's foreign policy toward Southeast Asia, comparing it with that of the former Trump administration. ASEAN has more affinity with China than the U.S. when it comes to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. Thank you always! |

Many thanks to you! We picked up an article on the "peaceful resolution" of the Taiwan issue. It has been one month since Prime Minister Suga and Biden met for the first time and issued a joint statement mentioning Taiwan—the high-profile statement included a sentence that emphasized the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and urged a peaceful resolution of the cross-strait issue. |

Nice talking to you! We read an article on Japan's "positive list" approach to security—article nine of the Constitution only permits the exercise of the right of collective self-defense in the limited case that it concerns the existence of Japan, while it is international common sense that a negative list usually regulates military actions. |

Good to talk to you! We read an article on the U.S.-China trade negotiations—the Biden administration has finally begun to move on the bilateral trade issue. While the article predicts that the "Phase 1" trade agreement will continue for the foreseeable future, I have a slightly different impression. |

Thanks for your intriguing lesson. Today, we picked up an article on Myanmar, past and present. We also talked about the Japan-Myanmar Association, which has been in the spotlight over the situation in Mynmar. |

Have a good one! Today, we picked up an article on Sino-U.S. relations that focused on the Taiwan issue. Then we talked about the bilateral diplomatic history since 1971 when Kissinger secretly visited Beijing and discussed the normalization with Zhou Enlai—the two realists were strangely united in an error that Japan would become a military power. |

I appreciate your pleasant and delightful lesson. Today's topic was a hijacking of an airplane by Belarus—an unprecedented hijacking by a state. Estonia, Ireland, and France are expected to raise the issue of Belaru's forced landing at an informal meeting of the UN Security Council. |

Pleasure talking to you. We perused an article on the summit meeting between the U.S. and South Korea; Biden expressed support for inter-Korean cooperation. While avoiding naming China, the joint statement clearly stated that "the two leaders stress the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait," which was obviously requested by Biden—Moon Jae-in did not want to provoke China. We also discussed the possibility of South Korea joining the Quad in the future, although this is probably premature to talk about. |

Many thanks to you! Today's article was a little fragmented, and even disjointed; especially, the second half was like a memo. Among them, we talked about the Havana Syndrome and the first face-to-face meeting between the foreign ministers of Russia and the U.S. in Reykjavik, Iceland, amidst a new firestorm of activity in the Arctic Circle. |

We talked about Nagorno-Karahak and the Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement, including the Russian deployment of peacekeeping troops. Then, we discussed U.S. President Biden's intention to recognize the mass murder of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during World War Ⅰ to be genocide. Have a nice weekend! |

I enjoyed talking with you! Today's topic was the Visting Forces Agreement (VFA) between the U.S. and the Philippines, an agreement that stipulates the specific details of the U.S.-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty, similar to the Status of Forces Agreement between the U.S. and Japan. We also discussed the U.S. Army's plan to deploy a new medium-range missile, the LRHW, in the Western Pacific in 2023. |

Thanks a lot! Although we read an article on the armed clashes between Israel and Palestinian forces, it might be a little less timely since it was written before Israel announced the ceasefire—the Israel government held a security council meeting yesterday and announced that it had approved a ceasefire with Hamas, the Islamic organization that effectively controls the Palestinian territory of Gaza. |

We picked up an article about Turkish foreign policy; Turkey, strengthening its ties with China, not only restored relations with Russia but began to purchase advanced Russian military equipment. Then we also discussed the newly discovered rich natural gas deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean, which allows Turkey to confront Greece, Cyprus, Egypt, and Israel. Many thanks to you! |

Good to talk to you! We read an article on Japan as a leading middle power in shaping the Asian future. We focused on Japan's relations with ASEAN countries, especially the Philippines—Japan's ODA to the Philipines amounted to $11 billion in 2020, continuing to the largest amount provided by any country or agency. |

Thank you for your lesson! We read an article on Taiwan as the nexus of technology and geopolitics, focusing on its semiconductors, particularly TSMC, comparing it with Samsung and others. Also, we talked about the role of Japanese companies such as Tokyo Electron, Lasertec, and Shin-Etsu Chemical. |
