We picked up an article on the Japanese deputy prime minister's comments about Taiwan and a state of existential crisis; Taiwan could be defended by exercising Japan's right of collective self-defense. Then we talked about public opinion in Japan and U.S. "strategic ambiguity." Have a nice weekend! |

Thank you for your insightful lesson while you are so busy. In this lesson, we read an article on U.S. policy toward China. I agree with the author's statement that the most important reason to avoid obsessing over China's regime is, it might damage the U.S. network of allies and like-minded countries. First of all, most of them do not think that regime change is possible. Secondly, U.S. allies and partners are already largely dependent on China economically. |

I'm glad to talk to you again! In the beginning, we read out an article on the Sino-U.S. rivalry in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific. Then we argued about some specific cases in the UAE and Pacific island countries as well as the Quad. |

I appreciate your intriguing lesson. First, we read out an article on Chinese growth and population, comparing them to other countries. Then we discussed immigration policy with a focus on Japan—if Japan does not change the policy and ease the conditions of immigration soon, Japan will face a situation where immigrants will not come to Japan even if Japan piles up subsidies. |

First, we read an article on South Korean foreign policy, which is in a dilemma between China and the U.S. Then we discussed South Korea's role as a middle power in some agendas such as climate change and ASEAN. Nice talking to you, Sienna! |

Many thanks for your tireless help! We picked up a paper on the fragile status quo in Taiwan. Then we also talked about U.S. think tanks' scenarios and Indo-Pacific Coordinator Cambell's dual message, which is close to Japan's attitude. |

We alternated reading out a paper on U.S. democracy on the brick. For instance, republican governors of Georgia, Arizona, Florida, and Iowa signed bills this year that would restrict voter's right to vote, including stricter background checks for mail-in ballots. Have a nice weekend! |

I appreciate your lesson as always. First, we read an article on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the CCP. Then we also talked about the origins of a Mao suit and so on. |

Many thanks to Sienna! We read a critical article on the Quad; the author regards the Quad as "a multilateral veneer" and "hype." He might wait a little longer to give his assessment of the Quad. |

Good to talk to you! We picked up an article on the B3W written by a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman. His idea is very close to the White House; for instance, an NSC director argues that the U.S. must be an alternative to the BRI and selectively support efficient infrastructure-building projects that allies can welcome. However, it is unlikely that developing countries will favor development assistance conditioned on values such as human rights, democracy, and the environment rather than on economic development. |

Nice talking to you! We read an article on the Biden administration's approach toward North Korea; the U.S., Japan, and South Korea held working-level talks on North Korea in Seoul last month, which was the first face-to-face meeting since the inauguration of the Biden administration. |

We picked up an article on the "Biden Doctrine"—the assertion that democracies, working together, can surpass despotic states in their ability to solve common problems and contribute to the common good of the region. Biden and his secretaries do not use the "Biden Doctrine" or "New Cold War," though. I appreciate your valuable lesson! |

Many thanks to Sienna! We read an article on the B3W, which was agreed upon at the G7 summit held in the U.K. last month. I was impressed by the author's idealistic way of thinking that the B3W will complement BRI and coexist with it. |

Good to talk to you! We chose an article on U.S. foreign policy toward Southeast Asia; the deputy secretary of state visited Southeast Asian countries last month. Essentially, the thinking in ASEAS is to strike a balance between its relationship with China and that with the U.S. |

We chose an article on India's role in the Quad; the Indian government decided to increase its involvement in the Quad as part of defense policy. In addition, the U.S. led a plan to supply vaccines to Southeast Asia, using the Quad framework. Have a great day! |

I'm glad to talk to you! We read an article, which argues that the Biden administration should learn lessons from JFK's "flexible response" strategy. I personally hope that Biden will correct Trump's policies and rebuild the U.S. trade policy. Still, as we agreed, it seems to be difficult to do so because he cannot afford to lose his current majority of seats in the Democratic Party in the mid-term elections next fall. |

Thanks for your enjoyable lesson. We picked up an article on U.S.-Russia security negotiations. The framework needs to be comprehensive enough to deal with new issues, such as midium-range missiles, cyber-attack, and hypersonic glide weapons, taking the opportunity of the five-year extension of New START. |

We chose an article on U.S. "strategic ambiguity" over Taiwan; the author claims Japan should re-examine the ambiguity. Then we also talked about the "unconsulted" prior consultation system based on an exchange of notes on the Far East clause of Article 6 of the U.S.-Japan Security Treaty. Have a nice trip! |

Many thanks for your delightful lesson! We read an article on a small South Korean high-tech company. The Biden administration's block of the company's acquisition illustrates one aspect of the U.S. policy to limit China's access to advanced chip technology. |
