Today we talked about fireworks in the Philippines and Japan. In the Philippines many of the people enjoy fireworks in the X'mas time. But it causes many nuisances like littering, air pollution and even injures and house fires. We discussed how we could improve the problems. Thank you for your interesting lesson, Marisse. See you! |

Today we talked about X'mas and New Year's Day. I struggled to explain the bells rung on New Year's Eve, but it's difficult to explain the reason why it is rung 108 times since it is related to the idea of Buddhism. After that, we discussed the issues of micro-plastics based on an article she introduced. It goes to the story of micro-beads in some tooth pastes and micro-fibres from polyester clothes. Thank you for your lesson, Ara. See you! |

In Japan we have the dilemma of should job promotions be based on perfomance or on seniority? Even in overseas Japanese companies maintain their systems, that is to say, seniority. A seniority based on promotions structure can eliminate the perceptions of favoritism. Employers typically won`t have to worry about a newer worker comong in and quickly leapfrogging them to obtain a promotion simply cause they are friends with an upper-level supervisor or cause they are more effective at playing the game of corporate politics. Promotion based on seniority can also help maintains a more harmonious workplace and it helps to develop team work among them. I know that perfomance -based promotion system will increase employees work efficiency and productivity. Nevertheless, I think we Japanese like to huddle together and do the things, therefore, seniority fits to us. |

Should capital punishment be abolished? I have always been on the fence about the death penalty. Capital punishment has the risk of executing innocent people. Thinking of the victim`s parents and family, the murderer deserve to die for murdering. One thing I assure, that is they need to pay for murdering at any rate. Suffering in jail for the rest of their lives without parole rotting in jail or by the death penalty. Thinking of the cost, death penalty can cost more than keeping one criminal incarcerated cause of the long complex legal procedures. What` your choice? |
