江戸時代に起こった三大飢饉について学びました。江戸時代はかなり寒い時代だったそうで、その原因の一つとして
the Maunder minimum というのがあるそうです。周期的に太陽の黒点が少なくなり、寒冷が
もたらされる現象を言うそうです。dendroclimatology 年輪気象学という言葉も初めて聞きました。先生もご存じなかったです。勉強になります。

今回は江戸時代の飢饉の時代にサツマイの栽培に尽力した青木昆陽についてお話ししました。
当たり前に食べているサツマイモですが先人たちの苦労があってこそ、今があるのだと思いました。

Double lesson

We mainly talked about M5.8 earthquake we had last week. It was the largest we had in ten years. 368000 were affected, were stuck in a train. There were temporary cut water supplies and power in some areas. Even we experienced the largest earthquake and Tsunami ten years ago, we are still susceptible to natural disasters. We talked about what kind of emergency stocks we should have. Also we talked about post doctors. Since the government has a limited amount of budget for studies, post doctors have to do office work on their own besides their studies and have limited amount of time for their studies. That's the reason why the number of thesis published is decreasing in Japan.

Double lesson

We mainly talked about Princess Mako's marriage. A lot of people disagree about her marriage and I explained why is that. It seemed about the issue with money, but it's not now. Kei said he would return the money to his mother's ex-fiance, but his mother's ex-fiance was not still convinced. I understand why Princess mako suffered from PTSD. Also Kei's appearance is not appropriate as a fiance of Princess Mako. That's also one of the reasons a lot of people disagree with her marriage.

Double lesson

We talked about a new Kishida administration. Most people are saying Liberal democratic Party will never change according to new board members. People tend to choose a person who is in favor of them as a new leader because they want to get positions, but that wouldn't change the party at all. Japanese tend to choose stability rather than change.

江戸時代の本草学について学びました。元々中国から入ってきた薬草についての学問でしたが、次第に鉱物、動物、などの
知識も含む博物学に範囲が広がったそうです。江戸時代、医者は内科のみで、薬剤師も兼ねていたため、薬草の知識が不可欠だったそうです。江戸の小石川薬草園は徳川幕府が作った日本で最初の植物園だそうです。機会があれば行ってみたいと思います。

江戸時代の奇人、変人、平賀源内についてお話しました。とにかく、ありとあらゆる分野に手を出していて、パワーを感じました。日本で初めて寒暖計､万歩計を作り、絵画、陶芸にも秀でて、見本市も企画・運営したそうです。悲惨な最後を遂げましたが、土用の丑の日にウナギを食べてせめてもの供養に代えたいと思います。

We went over my website, continued to discuss about wife and husband marital relationship. In the United states, the spouse who makes the most money has the most say in the family. If the husband stays at home and takes care of the home, he is looked down on. It's similar situation in Japan. Also, we talked about typhoon. In Japan, typhoons usually cross Japan from West to East and devastate most part of Japan. On the other hand, hurricane usually comes to the United States, but doesn't cross the United States since it changes to extratropical cyclone before crossing the United states..

We mainly talked about my business. I need to have a larger network that I can draw upon design work. I am thinking about adding a designer to my team. When creating webpages, slogan is very important to allure customers. Also we talked about the resignation of President Suga. He decided to resign on the same day as the closing ceremony of Tokyo Paralympics 2020. There is dichotomy to it. Some people say he is irresponsible, but some people say it is a right decision for him to resign so that Democratic Party can keep its power.

We mainly talked about Paralympics.
There are different rules for disabled athletes. For examples, they can have supporters with them to assist in finding their goals. At blind soccer, supporters ring a bell to let players know where the goal is. Players must have some sort of audio cues. At first, I had sympathy for the athletes with disabilities and had some sort of discrimination against them, but my perspective completely changed. In terms of exercise capacity, these athletes are comparable to others without disabilities. They have goals to achieve, have their own life and should be proud of themselves.

We mainly talked about a pregnant woman who lost her baby since she had Covid-19 positive and there were no hospitals to admit her. There are many cases where people cannot find hospitals to admit them. Most Japanese hospitals are under strain due to an explosive spread of coronavirus. Also we talked about that Covid-19 tests get boost amid battle against delta. Places for PCR test and daily covid-19 tests will dramatically ramp up. If individuals can get more PCR testing, it may be helpful to find out their condition and isolate themselves and then prevent them going about. The government wants to use the full capacity of public and private testing as much as possible.

解体新書に続き江戸時代の日本の医療についてお話しました。それまでの伝統的な中国医療に頼っていたところに
新しい西洋医学が紹介され当時の先駆者は大変ご苦労されたと思います。勉強になります。

このクラスでは「解体新書」についてお話しました。杉田玄白と前野良沢が翻訳を始めたとき､彼らはほとんど原書を
理解出来なかったそうです。頭蓋骨（skull)や軟骨(cartilage)という用語は当時の医学の概念になかったため､苦労して
創作したそうです。
