Thank you Rosemay. I walked too long after the lesson. I got tired and I had a sound deep sleep. This style of lesson, that is, walking and English conversation practice, I like very much. two birds with one stone. See you next time. |

Ms. Rose did a "research" for a new student like me in advance, so that we could have had a nice talk during the class. |

Today, Rose and I talked about learning languages. I told her that I had become more interested in the Japanese language since I came to the US. Rose said that experiencing different cultures would often make you more aware of your own culture. I totally agreed with what she said. We then talked about the importance of curiosity and stating one's opinions without fear of making mistakes. I wish I had joined the class like that when I was a kid. |

I mistakenly reserved a lesson tomorrow, but Rose kindly changed it to today. We talked about where we would travel after the pandemic. Rose said she had planned to go to Japan with her friends this spring, which didn't realize. She was interested in Hokkaido and Tokyo, mostly. I said I love Kyoto even though there are many tourists, and hotels are expensive nowadays. |

We first talked about the weather. It has been freezing cold in the morning for a couple of days where I live. Many people think we are enjoying nice weather in CA, but it's not always the case. Rose said she has been in a low mood lately but is gradually recovering. Many teachers are extrovert by nature, who are especially suffering from the near-lockdown in the Philippines. She also missed traveling. I found the online conferences convenient, though, since I don't need to travel to collect the points or credits to maintain a license. |

We first talked about writing a manuscript. It's daunting for me to collect all the relevant papers and put them in a software that helps me put references while writing. Then we talked about the current situation of coronavirus pandemic in the city we live in. Rose said she was asked to dine out with her colleagues, but she didn't feel safe going to the restaurant while she lives with her mother, who has pre-existing conditions. |

Rose told me that it's rainy season in the Philippines, and she can hear the sound of rain during the night. I said it hadn't rained for a while here in California, and I missed it so much. We both agreed that the smell after the rain was very soothing and refreshing. Then we talked about the Japanese words originated from English but don't have the same meaning as used among native speakers. Rose said she had encountered several Japanese-English words that she couldn't quite get a sense of. |

In today's lesson, Rose and I talked about how COVID-19 has changed our shopping habits. Rose said she had been wearing bright colors to cheer up her students in online classes. She missed those days when she wore dresses and enjoyed shopping. I said I'd been wearing nothing but jeans in CA, where most people dress casually. We agreed that wearing makeup and decent clothes, even while we stay at home, can increase feelings of self-esteem. See you next time! |

In today's lesson, we talked about zoom fatigue. I told Rose about my experience at the web conference yesterday. Although the meeting itself was informative, and I had a chance to get to know each other with the experts in my field, I found myself exhausted afterward. I guess the web conference requires more focus than an in-person meeting. Rose said she also experienced fatigue lately because of her teaching students online for more than two months. She has been trying limiting her time online this week, which seems to work well. See you next time! |

Today we talked about the Supreme Court justice nominee Amy Coney Barrett. I read a newspaper article about her bringing her kids to the hearing. We both agreed that we would not prefer bringing family members to work and wondered it was a setup. I also told her about my recent shopping experience on Amazon. Rose said she hadn't used Amazon since she read about its workers' poor working conditions. We may have to try using local stores more often when available. |

Today, we talked about the English education system in Japan. We both agree that we need to use the language to master it. Rose told me the interesting fact about the names of people in the Philippines. Because of the Spanish and the U.S. colonization history, many people in the Philippines have English first name and Spanish last name. Many Filipinos and Filipinas live in California, often mistaken as being of Latin origin because of their names. See you next time! |
