Today, Rose and I talked about learning languages. I told her that I had become more interested in the Japanese language since I came to the US. Rose said that experiencing different cultures would often make you more aware of your own culture. I totally agreed with what she said. We then talked about the importance of curiosity and stating one's opinions without fear of making mistakes. I wish I had joined the class like that when I was a kid.

I mistakenly reserved a lesson tomorrow, but Rose kindly changed it to today. We talked about where we would travel after the pandemic. Rose said she had planned to go to Japan with her friends this spring, which didn't realize. She was interested in Hokkaido and Tokyo, mostly. I said I love Kyoto even though there are many tourists, and hotels are expensive nowadays.

We first talked about the weather. It has been freezing cold in the morning for a couple of days where I live. Many people think we are enjoying nice weather in CA, but it's not always the case. Rose said she has been in a low mood lately but is gradually recovering. Many teachers are extrovert by nature, who are especially suffering from the near-lockdown in the Philippines. She also missed traveling. I found the online conferences convenient, though, since I don't need to travel to collect the points or credits to maintain a license.

We first talked about writing a manuscript. It's daunting for me to collect all the relevant papers and put them in a software that helps me put references while writing. Then we talked about the current situation of coronavirus pandemic in the city we live in. Rose said she was asked to dine out with her colleagues, but she didn't feel safe going to the restaurant while she lives with her mother, who has pre-existing conditions.

Rose told me that it's rainy season in the Philippines, and she can hear the sound of rain during the night. I said it hadn't rained for a while here in California, and I missed it so much. We both agreed that the smell after the rain was very soothing and refreshing. Then we talked about the Japanese words originated from English but don't have the same meaning as used among native speakers. Rose said she had encountered several Japanese-English words that she couldn't quite get a sense of.

In today's lesson, Rose and I talked about how COVID-19 has changed our shopping habits. Rose said she had been wearing bright colors to cheer up her students in online classes. She missed those days when she wore dresses and enjoyed shopping. I said I'd been wearing nothing but jeans in CA, where most people dress casually. We agreed that wearing makeup and decent clothes, even while we stay at home, can increase feelings of self-esteem. See you next time!

In today's lesson, we talked about zoom fatigue. I told Rose about my experience at the web conference yesterday. Although the meeting itself was informative, and I had a chance to get to know each other with the experts in my field, I found myself exhausted afterward. I guess the web conference requires more focus than an in-person meeting. Rose said she also experienced fatigue lately because of her teaching students online for more than two months. She has been trying limiting her time online this week, which seems to work well. See you next time!

Today we talked about the Supreme Court justice nominee Amy Coney Barrett. I read a newspaper article about her bringing her kids to the hearing. We both agreed that we would not prefer bringing family members to work and wondered it was a setup. I also told her about my recent shopping experience on Amazon. Rose said she hadn't used Amazon since she read about its workers' poor working conditions. We may have to try using local stores more often when available.

Today, we talked about the English education system in Japan. We both agree that we need to use the language to master it. Rose told me the interesting fact about the names of people in the Philippines. Because of the Spanish and the U.S. colonization history, many people in the Philippines have English first name and Spanish last name. Many Filipinos and Filipinas live in California, often mistaken as being of Latin origin because of their names. See you next time!

Today, we talked about the U.S. vice presidential debate yesterday. It wasn't very pleasant to see Mike Pence ignored the moderator and kept talking, exceeding his allotted time. Someone even made a GIF of Kamala Harris saying, "I'm talking." We then talked about how it is essential but difficult to have empathy for others. I told her that the elementary school teacher is trying to teach kids empathy using picture books. Thank you, and see you next time.

We first talked about the president's health status and tonight's vice president debate. Then I told her that I plan to start blogging in the future and now collect information on how to do it. Rose said to me about her experience of writing a restaurant review for her friend's blog. I guess more and more people are thinking of having their website while stuck at home. See you next time!

Today, I talked to her about my first experience with Whole Foods delivery, which was available to every Amazon prime member and was extremely fast and convenient. We then talked about how small businesses, such as local supermarkets and coffee shops, could survive the economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic with fewer customers. I told her the articles that Amazon is hiring more and more workers, especially for warehouse and delivery jobs. See you next time!

Today, we first talked about the news of President Trump tested positive for coronavirus. It was breaking news last night. I also told her about the twitter post about an online proctoring system. It seems that the system is causing anxiety in many students, even mistakingly accusing some of them of cheating. Then we talked about how online exams can be practical and less stressful for students. Thank you very much for the lesson. See you next time.

Thank you for the wonderful lesson. Today we talked about yesterday's first presidential debate. The one I watched was a live stream by The New York Times, and I enjoyed the feature that it came with a live chat. We also talked about what makes good public speaking and our personal experiences speaking in front of an audience, such as classroom activities and conferences.

Thank you for another wonderful lesson. Today, we talked about the importance of good sleep and how it seriously affects our quality of life. Some people are more susceptible to caffeine and blue light than others. Rose said lavender oil helps her sleep well. We also talked about the home office. Because of the growing need for a robust home office among people in the U.S., there seems to be a shortage of office desks in some areas, urging people to DIY.

Thank you very much for another great lesson. Talking with you always brings joy into my life. Today we talked about who usually cooks in the household, male or female. I told her that female has been responsible for cooking and other major household chores in Japan for a long time, and it still is. We also talk about how to give effective presentations. I introduced her to the webinar that I took recently on PowerPoint presentation and data visualization, which I had wanted to learn for a long time.
