We talked about the article "Third of farmed fruit and veg deemed too ugly to sell". Unexpectedly, a lot of fruit and vegetables have been discarded which are misshapen and worng size. The reason is that customers tend not to buy irregular size or shaped produces. This trend is also seen in Japan. But, actually quite a few customers don't mind shape and size of produces if the quality is same. To select good fruits and vegs, farmers grow excess produces and spend much energy and logistics become complicated. We should accept such produces which are ugly but have standard quality. Mark explained my unfamiliar words and phrases and suggested the essential points of the article. Especially, I like "wonky" =not straight or level, sounds cool. "go a long way to..",,,etc. Thank you, Mark for the interesting topic as always. See you next time.

It's been a while to have Chris's lesson since we had Obon holidays, but I'm relieved that their English wasn't getting rusty. They enjoyed his lesson very much as usual. I'm happy that they are learning a lot from Chris.

自己紹介 Hello: My name is Rick. I am a retired American living in the Philippines. I am TEFL certified to teach English as a foreign language. I have lived in many parts of the US and have what we call a “neutral accent” meaning my pronunciation is very clear and correct.

My background is in education and technology. I taught American high school for four years and then did adult education for a year or so. I transitioned into the computer industry and worked with computers and systems for 20 years. Starting at entry level positions I worked my up to positions as manager and director, and then to CIO and VP of Technology at my last job.

I have traveled to much of the world. I have been to all the US states except Alaska. I lived in southern Japan – Yatsushiroshi – for a year. I made two extended trips through China, and I’ve been to Europe, Canada, and Mexico.

My other interests are health and fitness, I workout almost daily and try to maintain a healthy diet. I am also interested in cooking and baking in a healthy way. I am very passionate about learning and am always studying something. My current big challenge is to learn Tagalog, Filipino, which I find very difficult.

Throughout my career, I have been interested in education both as a student and a teacher. I have many years of college and while working in technology I studied for and took numerous certification exams. I also led seminars and training programs for other staff.

I am retired now but enjoy being busy and I am very excited to be teaching again. I enjoy teaching and helping others to learn. Mastering a foreign language is a difficult and challenging undertaking. I know how hard I am working on learning Tagalog. It takes consistency, effort, and I believe passion to learn a new language. You need to be excited about it, passionate about it, and have fun at it.

We can work with whatever materials you find interesting, or focus primarily on speaking and lessening skills.

I hope you choose to work with me. I am sure I can help you with your English, and help you keep interested, consistent, and excited about learning it.
